Summary of
Efficacy of Standardized Extract of Bacopa monnieri (Bacognize) on Cognitive Functions of Medical Students: A Six-Week, Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trial
By
Purpose: Evaluate whether standardized Bacopa monnieri extract improves memory in medical students after six weeks of use.
Methods: In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 60 second-year medical students aged 19–22 were assigned to receive 150 mg Bacopa extract or placebo twice daily for six weeks. Baseline and post-treatment assessments included digit span and logical memory tests and serum biomarkers.
Results: Two students dropped out; final analyses showed that Bacopa significantly improved digit span backwards and logical memory scores compared with placebo. Serum calcium increased within normal limits, and the Bacopa group’s cholesterol decreased and HDL increased, though lipid changes were not significant versus placebo.
Conclusion: Six weeks of 300 mg daily Bacopa extract enhanced certain memory components even among high-performing individuals. The authors recommend longer studies to assess lasting effects and to explore the role of calcium and neurotransmitter systems.
